The New Meaning of MBA

Posted by admin in Computers on 06 21st, 2008

Thanks to Apple, MBA now has a new meaning: MacBook Air.

The new MacBook Air is Apple’s thinnest laptop yet, measuring just 0.76 inches (1.93 cm) at its thickest point and 0.16 inches (0.4 cm) at its thinnest…it is surely sleek and sexy, especially with its Aluminum case.

What magic did Apple do to keep the Air this thin? Well, they removed a staple of almost all of their previous laptops…a built-in optical drive. The MacBook Air instead has an optional USB super drive. Aside from this, users have the option of using Remote Disc, wirelessly accessing and using the optical drive of another computer as its own, although this can only be used to install new software.

It also only has one USB port, so almost everything has to be done wirelessly. As such, the Air supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/draft n. The MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch glossy LED-backlit LCD widescreen display with a 1280×800 resolution, a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM, and an 80 GB ATA 1.8” 4200 rpm hard drive, with the option for a 64 GB solid-state drive.

Only time will tell whether its good looks and sleek and sexy form factor will be enough to compensate for some of its inadequacies.

Here Comes Android

Posted by admin in Communications, Computers, Software on 02 19th, 2008

Google, in its quest for global supremacy, begins another ambitious project…Android.

Android is a mobile device platform based on the Linux operating system, developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. Android, a complete software platform and operating system for mobile phones, is slated for release in late 2008. It is as of now still under development, and is designed to run even on handsets with relatively low RAM and processor speeds.

Currently, the platform supports a wide range of wireless connectivity technologies, including GSM, CDMA, EDGE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. SMS and MMS are already supported, with threaded SMS being one of the most-awaited features. There is also good multimedia support, with the platform able to play various audio and video formats such as MP3, MPEG 4, H.264, AAC, JGP and more.

Of course, the biggest draw of Android is the fact that it is open source, unlike most mobile platforms (Apple’s iPhone being the most notable closed-source platform). Like with Linux, developers hope that the open-source nature of Android will help in faster development, as well as faster and easier bug finding and fixing. The Open Handset Alliance includes Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel, and Nvidia.

Get physical with the Wii Fit

The Nintendo Wii just got more physical!

After introducing motion-based controls with the Wii remote, Nintendo ups the ante again, this time, with Wii fit.

Wii fit comes with the Wii balance board which measures the user’s weight and center of gravity. Given this information and the user’s height, the game then calculates for the user’s Body Mass Index. Wii fit includes about 40 different activities, all with the aim of helping the user achieve better physical fitness.

Some of the activities in the game include yoga poses, pushups, aerobic exercises, and balance games like ski jumping and tightrope walking. More difficult exercises and challenges are unlocked as the player progresses through the game. The Wii fit is a helpful tool for those who want to get fit and healthy while still having fun and staying in the comfort of home. It can make otherwise sedentary “gamers” sweat it out more, and that can only be good for them, right?

The Wii fit though is not a total replacement for a real full-body workout. But who cares? With Wii fit, you can “exercise”, improve your balance, get more fit and healthy, all while still having lots of fun. Who ever thought we can someday say that about any form of exercise?
